What is LASIK - Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a way to fix your eyesight, without the use of glasses or contacts, and a way for you to be able to see the world as you are supposed to see it. Corrective laser eye surgery is considered as one of the newest and established technologies for eyesight correction.

Laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure that will correct myopia, which is near sighted vision, astigmatism and hyperopia, which is farsighted vision. Laser eye surgery operates on the cornea and usually takes only a few minutes, depending on the patient's present state of health.

The LASIK Procedure

To determine whether or not a patient is a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery, the ophthalmologist will conduct a pre- LASIK eye examination. Once completed, patients should follow certain guidelines in the days and weeks preceding LASIK vision correction.

The traditional LASIK vision correction procedure begins with the creation of a hinged corneal flap. After the eye is anesthetized with topical eye drops, the LASIK eye surgeon creates the flap on the outer surface of the eye to expose the underlying cornea. The flap can be created with a microkeratome (a hand-held device) or with the IntraLase® laser, which allows the surgeon to create the flap using a computer-guided laser. After LASIK eye surgery many patients experience immediate improved vision, although it can take up to six months for vision to stabilize. Patients can expect a short LASIK surgery recovery period but there is usually little to no discomfort following the procedure. Follow-up exams ensure proper healing.

What Happens During LASIK Surgery

Creating the Corneal Flap
To begin the traditional LASIK vision correction procedure, the eye will be anesthetized with topical eye drops. The patient will be asked to lie on a table with laser equipment mounted above it. The eye will be held open with a special instrument, a speculum. The other eye is protected by a shield. As the patient stares at a small blinking light, the LASIK surgeon will use a microkeratome or the Intralase® laser to create a hinged corneal flap on the outer layer of the eye.

Reshaping the Cornea
After the flap has been created, an excimer laser is used to remove the precise amount of corneal tissue needed to correct your refractive error. As the LASIK vision correction patient continues to stare at the blinking light, the LASIK surgeon then will apply very small, rapid bursts of the laser, reshaping the cornea. This portion of the procedure only takes about 15 seconds per eye.

Replacing the Flap
Once the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is replaced. The eye will heal by itself and no stitches are necessary. The actual surgery usually takes less than 15 minutes, but preoperative preparation may extend LASIK vision correction surgery time to one hour.

What is modern surface Laser correction?

Many a time, raising a flap with microkeratome or Femtosecond Lasik is risky, and the vision correction is abandoned. In some the surface is asymetrical or irregular, and wavefront optimised standard treatment will not give satisfactory results. Here the Pentacam anterior corneal surface topography image is transfered to the Lasik machine, which than corrects every minute irregularity to give best of the vision, which was impossible either with glasses or contact lenses.

How to preserve my cornea to the maximum possible extent?

How safe is Lasik?

Extensive pre Lasik tests are conducted to confirm that the procedure is safe for the given individual. Keratoconus is ruled out. Schimer test, Pentacam analysis, thorough eye examination, Retinal assessment, IOP, refraction, Biometry etc are performed as a routine. Lasik or any of its modifications done at Karthik Netralaya is extremely safe.
